CONCRETE CONTRACTORS
Useful Concrete Definitions & Descriptions
Approach: A section of driveway that connects to the street/asphalt pavement. Working/pouring a concrete approach in the city of Austin, requires a licensed Right of Way contractor.
PSI: Pounds Per Square Inch, a unit measure of pressure.
Rebar: Steel bar used to reinforce concrete. It is used to increase tensile strength and comes in varying thicknesses. These terms are interchangeable for rebar. Ex: #3 rebar=3/8” rebar, #4 rebar=1/2” rebar, #5 rebar=5/8” rebar
Textured Broom Finish: Can be done lightly or roughly, usually done on outdoor concrete, it is achieved by running a broom over setting concrete. It provides slip resistance.
Smooth finish: Indoor concrete, this finish gives a tight, smooth, finish that can be stained or polished as a floor. This finish is NOT slip-resistant.
Water-based stains: Are stains with water as a base, they use a pigmentation that can penetrate the concrete but are more prone to cracking, chipping, or peeling. The benefit of using these types of stains is that they are available in a wider variety of colors and are not as permanent as acid stains. They also give more of a uniform look as compared to acid stains.
Acetone Dyes: Are dyes that are mixed with acetone and sprayed on to clean cured concrete with a special tank sprayer. These dyes penetrate the concrete and are resistant to cracking, chipping, or peeling. They also come in a larger assortment of colors compared to acid stains. They give a variegated marble look but not as pronounced as the acid stains.
Pigmented Sealer: An acrylic solvent-based sealer with pigmentation in it. These sealers allow coloring and sealing of concrete surfaces in one fell swoop. They are available in a wide variety of colors and give a uniform solid paint like finish. We highly recommend our pigmented sealer installation on new patio additions to help make all pieces of your patio look like one monolithic piece. They are a cheaper alternative to a concrete overlay and can dress up the concrete with a very good-looking color.

Concrete Patios
Bioscapes knows how to install a professional product that you'll get years of use from
When it comes to concrete patio areas, Bioscapes knows exactly how to install a professional product that you’ll get years of use from.
We begin our patio builds by meeting with you, getting an idea of how’d you like to use your space, and determining where and in which shape you’d like your concrete patio built.
We also take time to assess the quality of soil we will be building on since improper installation can eventually result in a shifting and/or cracked concrete patio.
Once our initial assessment is complete, we decide on which material to reinforce your concrete with. We use wire mesh, or #3 or #4 rebar in our patios depending on your intended use of the patio. We take care to tie in your concrete patio with your existing foundation by installing rebar tie-ins to keep your patio from breaking away from your foundation.
When choosing a concrete contractor, due diligence is key. A very important question you should ask is how much experience do they have? Do they have a strong background in concrete? After all, once installed, concrete will sit where it is for decades and a major or minor mistake can easily cost you thousands of dollars to repair or replace.
Don't make a costly mistake

They can be installed new or as additions to your existing driveway. If you need to add a few extra feet of space it is something that we can do. Sometimes all a driveway needs is a repair and other times it needs a complete concrete demolition/demo. When we meet with you for an estimate, we take the time to assess your current driveway and determine the best cost-effective solution. Whatever you need, we’re the team for you.
Many city ordinances require that you get permits for your driveway. We will assess your project and determine what needs to be done to comply with your city’s code. If a permit is necessary, BioScapes will take care of it. If permits are not needed, construction can begin immediately. We encourage you to give us a call to schedule an on-site estimate.
